In educational terms, Derek Wenmoth is a highly respected practitioner from whom we can learn enormously. His blog offers knowledge and insight which emanate from truly reflective practice. His willingness to share and his desire to continue to learn from others are trademarks of the networks of people he grows. His challenge to us, is in what actions we take from this point, to continue to build real communities of practice and improve the learning outcomes for our students. Professional Reading # 1

In April 2001 Nola Campbell (15.12.46 - 04.08.05) from the School of Education based at the University of Waikato produced a paper for the Ministry of Education titled

“e-teaching, e-learning and e-education

A paper to inform the development of the ICT Strategy in New Zealand for the Ministry of Education”

In the introduction Nola states

“It is no longer a question of whether or not we will implement e-learning in our schools, but whether we will do it well.”

The paper is set in the context of New Zealand schools and their rapidly developing use of information and communication technology [ICT]. Its key focus and emphasis is on the changes to teaching and learning that will result from an e-education environment.

The paper focuses on three areas

1.  An analysis of e-learning and its impact on teachers.

2. The changing roles of teachers and the classroom environment with the advent of e-learning

3. How New Zealand schools can move towards establishing strong pedagogical bases for e-learning.

It also provides a good starting point for those teachers who are unsure exactly what e-learning, e-education and the e-word means.
